A lot of people have questions about Baby Point. First, how do you pronounce the name? The answer to this question is deceptive. “Baby” is pronounced “Bawby” after one of its founders, James Baby who was involved in the Quebec fur trade. The second question, “Where is it?” Baby Point is a peninsula that starts at Jane St to the east and ends at the Humber River to the west. Its Northern boundary is St. Marks Road and to the south at Raymond. This long and thin residential neighbourhood often gets lost, except for the iconic gates punctuating its entrance on Jane. This is a secluded neighbourhood that doesn’t see a lot of visitors. Baby Point dead-ends into the Humber River so the general public never travel through it to get somewhere else, and that is exactly how the residents would like it to stay.
Despite its location off Jane Street, Baby Point is one of the most wealthy neighbourhoods in Toronto’s west end, with large mansions dating back to the 1920’s and 1930’s. According to census data, there are 315 households in Baby Point with the average yearly household income at $850,287. A staggering 88% of homes are owner occupied, which is much higher than the rest of Toronto. Although it is a wealthy neighbourhood, Baby Point doesn’t have the notoriety of the Kingsway, or even of High Park. However, the secretive nature of this enclave just adds to the character (and value) of this charming neighbourhood.
