In Memory of Jake Abramowicz

In Memory of Jake Abramowicz

We lost a fantastic mortgage broker over the weekend. Jake Abramowicz tragically died on the weekend of a cycling accident. We know many of our clients knew and worked with Jake, so we want to use this space to share the sad news with you.

Jake was one of Canada’s most successful mortgage brokers, but he was never too busy to take your call. Jake frequently saved our deals when other brokers told clients that they couldn’t get financing.

I can think of many clients off the top of my head who simply would not have been able to buy their home without Jake’s guidance. Often, when Jake pulled off financing for a client after another broker or bank had turned them down, it felt like magic. It wasn’t magic, though; he just knew the rules better. Jake was better at the business than anyone else. If he got a rejection from the bank for a loan application, he would call the bank directly. He would plead his client’s case and, almost every time, he would save the deal. He knew all the esoteric exceptions and programs that could help buyers get a mortgage. He saved many of my buyers from, as he would put it, the “lending hell” of ending up with a “B” lender and high interest rates. Whenever clients were having trouble, I could say, “Don’t worry, I’ve got a guy,” and Jake always came through.

Jake was also a friend of ours. I will miss picking up the phone and hearing him yell, “ROBBIE!” on the other end when he was calling to give an update about a client. Shortly before Christmas 2019, Jake hosted Kim and me, along with some other real estate agents, in a private box at the Raptors game. He was generous with food and drink. Despondent when the Raptors were losing at the beginning and joyful when they finally won. It was an amazing evening. Jake filled any room he walked into with a positive, almost frenetic, energy. One of the last times we spoke, he was talking about renting a boat and hosting another party. I told him we’d be there in a heartbeat. He was full of joy and always had a plan for having more fun.

Our thoughts are with his wife and young son, who have lost such an extraordinary man.
